The ribs on the upper and/or lower side of the washer dig into the screw and the clamping part and efficiently prevent the screw from working loose. Curved washers are highly flexible and reduce the loss of pre-tensioning force from settling phenomena.

Working principle

Depending on the requirements and design, washers with a locking function can be used to lock/set screw connections and preventing loosening or loss of the connection.

Material

They are available in the hardest steel grades, as well as in stainless steel. Soft materials such as brass or aluminium are unsuitable for washers with a locking function.

Working principle of the locking functions

Screw connections must be properly secured for the intended use. The correct mechanism must be selected to ensure the functioning of machines and components. A distinction is made between three groups:

  • Setting locks

    These use elastic components to compensate for relaxation and creep phenomena. As a result, a portion of the pre-tensioning force can be retained and the connection holds fast.

  • Locking devices

    These increase the friction on the screw bolt using chemical or mechanical clamping mechanisms. The increased torque prevents full loosening of the connection. At the same time, loss of pre-tensioning force can be kept to a minimum.

  • Anti-rotation locks

    By causing the partner threads to lock mechanically or adhere to one another, these are able to maintain at least 80% of the previously applied pre-tensioning force, even when subject to high dynamic loads. This is essential to keep a component in operation in safety-relevant applications.

Types of washers with locking function

  • Spring locking washers

    Locking washers are retaining elements shaped like a cup spring and are ribbed on both sides. The counter-toothing bites into the mating face, creating a reliable form fit. Depending on application, in addition to maintaining pre-tensioning force, it is also necessary to consider securing the connection against unscrewing.

  • Conical spring washers

    Conical spring washers are slightly conical and increase the flexibility of the connection. In the event of settling losses, the applied pre-tensioning force is maintained by the spring action of the washers.

  • Disc springs

    Like conical spring washers, disc springs are slightly conical. The use of disc springs increases the flexibility of a screw connection, securing it against significant loss of pre-tensioning force. This reduces the impact of significant settling losses. It is also possible to combine several disc springs in order to adjust the flexibility.

  • Shaft lock and washer discs

    Shaft locks have ratchets on the inside. During assembly, they anchor themselves into the material of the component, locking them against axial displacement. With very high axial forces, it is preferable to use DIN 471 lock rings.

  • Tab washers

    The locking action is achieved by means of tabs or lugs on the washer. Depending on their shape, tab washers are used in combination with round nuts, for example, to attach bearings to shafts. Tab washers have additional metal tabs that can be used to create a form fit. These "tabs" or "lugs" require a suitable connecting element on the component or fastener. Tab washers are unsuitable for highly pre-tensioned screw connections.
