Climate goals validated by Science Based Targets initiative
Böllhoff has had its CO2 targets externally validated for the 2024 sustainability reporting year.
Another milestone reached on the path to a more sustainable future
Starting in the 2024 reporting year, we are setting ambitious CO₂ targets to reduce our environmental footprint. We have taken an important step forward by having these targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. This ensures that our targets are transparent, scientifically sound and in line with the Paris Agreement.
Our near-term CO₂ targets
In concrete terms, we want to cut our absolute greenhouse gas emissions in our own business activities (Scope 1 and 2) in half by 2030 (-50% compared to our base year 2021). We want to reduce emissions in our value chain (Scope 3) by a quarter over the same period (-25% compared to 2021).
Both near-term targets were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative in 2025. This means we have established an important guideline for ourselves on the path to a more sustainable future. After all, ambitious goals drive us to find ever more sustainable solutions.

Status and current initiatives
We have already made progress today, thanks to measures we have initiated in recent years. For example, we have reduced our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 29% to date (from 19.5 kt of CO₂e in 2021 to 13.8 kt in 2024). Emissions in our value chain (Scope 3) have been reduced by 12.2% (390.4 kt of CO₂e in 2021 to 342.6 kt in 2024). Here are three examples of initiatives behind this reduction:

- Photovoltaic systems at Böllhoff
- OBS in practice - reducing standby times
At our production site in France, we largely rely on recycled steel as a raw material for the production of steel fasteners. Our goal: from 2025 onwards, we want to use recycled steel only - 100%

The Science Based Targets initiative, SBTi for short, was established in 2015 as a partnership between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The SBTi sets standards for science-based climate targets and provides companies with tools and guidelines on how quickly emissions must be reduced in line with the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Agreement. It also offers companies the opportunity to ensure the quality of their climate goals through independent validation.
Today, science-based targets are part of the climate strategy of many companies and financial institutions. Since its foundation, over 10,000 companies and institutions have joined the initiative.
