Materials science and materials engineering are among the main drivers of innovation in almost all areas of life and technology. Modern lightweight materials, for example, contribute to reduce fuel consumption and thus exhaust gas emissions. That is why material innovations are often the driving force in product development – which is also true for our sector, the fastening technology.

Successful adhesive bonding

Let us now focus on an innovative fastening technology – surface and material-friendly adhesive bonding. We have developed a new technology: ONSERT®. It is a joint development by Böllhoff and DELO. On the one hand, there is Böllhoff as the fastening and assembly expert and on the other hand DELO as the adhesive expert. Fastening elements made of transparent/translucent plastic with or without thread reinforcement can be fixed with light-curing adhesive. DELO-PHOTOBOND and DELO-DUALBOND adhesives are primarily used. They are light-curing one- and two-component acrylates.

Adhesive is applied to the foot which is then joined on the surface of the component. The thickness of the adhesive layer is regulated through spacers and usually ranges between 0.1 and 0.2 mm. The speed of this method is particularly impressive. Curing with an LED takes about 4 seconds. This process can even be fully automated. The joint can immediately be loaded.

Initial situation


Lightweight construction booming – and no end in sight

Resource saving, energy and material efficiency as well as CO2 emissions reduction are directly linked to lightweight construction. Lightweight materials such as aluminium, plastics, high-strength steels and magnesium alloys are what the automotive as well as the aerospace industry and general mechanical engineering focus on. This is a development which has also produced a great number of new compositions (hybrid construction and multi-material design).
A challenge to fastening technology. In the automotive industry, for example, not only the traditional joining methods such as resistance spot welding and arc welding are employed. Laser welding for structural connections is also widely used. Flexible composite constructions as well as new constructions for vehicles made of prefabricated modules require different joining technologies. Adhesive and mechanical joints have increased in importance.



Adhesive bonding to avoid surface and material damage

This surface- and component-friendly fastening technology can be employed to join composite materials with further components, for example. Material flexibility is high and the resistance to dynamic forces good. Adhesive bonding is a simple process so an efficient automation and high cycle times can be achieved. All in all, the user benefits from the economic adhesive processing which can be integrated into the industrial process in many different ways. Which is, by the way, the main focus in the development of this innovative joining method.
