Innovative joints for tomorrow's car: RIVTAC® is the name of a completely new joining method we have developed to meet the present and future requirements of the automotive sector.
The new technology survived its "baptism by fire" in the much-discussed "Light Car" concept, which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010. In 2013, the series production started – at high speed.

RIVTAC® high-speed joining

With this innovative mechanical method a nail-like auxiliary joining part, the tack, is accelerated to high speed and driven into the unpunched joining parts. The ogival point of the tack displaces the material without causing any protrusion. The joint strength in the bottom joining part is achieved through a combination of force and form fit holding mechanisms.

The only thing constant in life is change.

This is especially true when it comes to body construction in the car industry. Increased comfort, driving dynamics and safety, reduced weight and fuel consumption – all combined with a lowering of manufacturing and production costs. Requirements which have brought about a significant change in the mix of materials found in a car. Steel, light metals and plastics are still the most important materials, but within these groups there are many new compositions – as well as substitutes for them.
The trend towards improving vehicle efficiency through systematic lightweight construction has led among other things to a demand for functionally optimised chill-cast and die-cast components, presenting a major challenge in terms of joining technology. Firstly, the often heat-treated parts need to be joined at low temperature to preserve the properties of the materials. Secondly, components are generally only accessible from one side. And lastly, with a view to costs, designers are keen to get by with just a single process, with no pre-punching.

Future potential

With access from one side only, traditional joining methods in use today are pushed to their limits. That is not the case with tack setting. Even high-strength parts and profiles with a tensile strength of over 1000 MPa and multilayer joints can be joined in a controlled and consistent manner, with exceptionally good strength characteristics. In this way the process satisfies the stringent requirements governing safety-related joints, while also combining well with adhesive technology.
With a short joining time of well under one second, this method is over three times faster than self-tapping fastening, for example. Impressive cycle times – with correspondingly attractive cost-cutting potential. As an added bonus for users, the fastener is almost universally applicable.
With tack setting, we have taken a major leap forward and further underlined our company's innovative strength. Finally, this process represents the ultimate in high-tech. The tack geometry and the material composition of the fastener presented particular challenges. At the same time we needed to accelerate the tack to the necessary speed. The result, which has involved a massive research effort, fulfils current and future requirements in car body construction in particular.
